Alan joined Durham Constabulary on 12th November 1979. His first posting was at Darlington, as a beat officer. He was then posted to Barnard Castle, where he worked for several years. In 1985, he successfully applied to go onto Traffic and covered the A1 and A66. Towards the end of his career, Alan moved into the Telephone Investigation Unit where he worked until he retired on 11th November 2009.
Alan received a Commendation for good collective police work, which effected the conviction of numerous persons for burglary, theft, handling, criminal deception, attempted criminal deception, driving whilst disqualified and other offences. His actions were said to have been in the best traditions of Durham Constabulary and were admirable examples of first-class police work.

Alan is survived by wife Maria and daughter Hannah.
