Ian joined Durham County Constabulary in 1971; his first posting being to Darlington. Around 1977 he moved to CID, based at Newton Aycliffe. Upon promotion to Sergeant, Ian moved back into uniform at Bishop Auckland, and, after a period in uniform, he became a member of the Regional Crime Squad, based at Chester-le-Street.
His next promotion saw him back at Bishop Auckland as uniformed Inspector, prior to moving to Barnard Castle, from where he retired in 2001, after 30 years’ service.
During Ian’s Police career, he was awarded several commendations and in 1981, following an incident which left him seriously injured; his arm being almost severed by a machete, Ian was presented with the Matt Wilkinson Memorial Trophy.
