Christmas Greeting From The Chairman

As we near the end of a year that has seen the entire global population affected, to varying degrees,
by the pandemic virus Covid-19, we also near Christmas and the start of a New Year.
I am sure that the majority of us have heard of someone who has contracted this virus, with some not surviving its devastating effects. Let’s hope and pray that the introduction of the vaccination program provides a prompt stabilisation and reduction in infections, in the not too-distant future.
Whilst Christmas lock-down restrictions have changed a number of times recently due to the increase in infections, let us all abide by the governmental advice and stay safe and well during this very different festive season.
May I take this opportunity to wish all Durham NARPO Officers, Committee and Members, together with prospective members, a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthier New Year.

A time to reflect on Remembrance Sunday

Remembrance Day is also known as Poppy Day.

It was first observed in 1919, however until 1945 it was called Armistice Day. Traditionally there is two minutes of silence at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month because that was the time (in Britain) when the armistice became effective in 1918.
Today, in the UK Remembrance Sunday is also observed on the Sunday nearest to November 11th. So, in the United Kingdom, two minutes' silence is observed on November 11 itself, and on the second Sunday of November. Remembrance Sunday, ceremonies are held at War Memorials, all over the UK and over the years it has become a day to commemorate not just the sacrifice of servicemen and women but the suffering of civilians in times of war.

Remembrance Sunday is commemorated by church services around the UK and a parade of ex-service personnel in London’s Whitehall. Wreaths of poppies are placed on war memorials from the Cenotaph, a war memorial in Whitehall, to the tiniest war memorials in villages all over Britain. Small wooden crosses are placed in Gardens of Remembrance as private acts of remembering individual losses and suffering and people pin poppies to their coat or jacket.

History states that it was the poem 'In Flanders Fields' written in 1915 by Colonel John McCrae, a Canadian Medical Officer, that captured the imagination of the British people in the dark days of trench warfare on the Western Front when so many young soldiers failed to return. Six months before the Armistice, McCrae was brought on a stretcher to a big hospital on the French coast and saw the cliffs of Dover from his room. He died that night and was buried in a cemetery above Wimereux. Before he died, he said to the doctor: "Tell them this . . . If ye break faith with us who die, we shall not sleep." An American woman, Miss Moina Michael, wrote a moving poem in reply and bought 25 red poppies, wearing one herself as a way to keep faith with the war dead; a French woman, Madame Guerin, came up with the practical idea of making and selling artificial poppies to help ex-service men and their dependents in need.

Britain's first Poppy Day was held in 1921 and the money raised helped children in war-devastated areas. The Royal British Legion opened its own poppy factory in London in 1922 to give practical help in time of need to all who have served in the armed forces and their widows and dependents. The paper poppies that are worn today are made by ex-service personnel and are sold by representatives of the Royal British Legion, an organisation of ex-servicemen and women. Today, they make more than 35 million poppies and 65,000 wreaths for the annual poppy appeal. Poppies grew in great abundance in the shell-torn fields of Flanders during the War. Because of its abundance it became the symbol of remembrance of two world wars.

In Flanders Fields

The poem by John McCrae

In Flanders' fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders' fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high,
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders' Fields.

NARPO (Durham Branch) Annual Luncheon
I am sure that you will all be aware that we were unable to print the Summer Edition of the Durham Peeler this year and that the Annual Luncheon Menu and Order Sheet would have been delivered along with the magazine.
Whilst we had made arrangements for the luncheon prior to the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus pandemic, we have been monitoring the position ever since.
As I am sure that you will all expect we have made the decision to cancel this year’s luncheon.
Our paramount concern was for the safety of our loyal members, who support the event.
Other considerations were the uncertainty of a venue that would be available on the day for the number of attendees, given the ever changing government guidelines and able to comply with all social distancing and sanitising.

Durham NARPO Branch - information on planned events

Durham NARPO Branch Meetings

Although stating the obvious, due to the current position with regard to the Covid-19 restrictions, the Branch Meeting due to be held at Bishop Auckland Hospital Club on Monday 11th May 2020 is cancelled.  It may well be that we may also have to review the July meeting, again due to be held at Bishop Auckland.

The Prince Bishop river cruise that was to be considered in June 2020 has also, at this point, been postponed.  This will be reviewed as and when circumstances permit.

The Summer 2020 edition of the Durham Peeler is currently postponed and depending upon changes that would allow us to progress this we may, at present, have to dispense with the Summer edition all together and resume publication once facilities allow.

Annual Luncheon

Obviously we are not, at present, in a position to say whether or not we will be able to hold our luncheon in October.  There are a number of factors beyond our control, which will determine our final decision.  It would be great to think that some normality resumed, which would allow our annual gathering to proceed; please do not hold your breath for such news.

Advice and Assistance

Please keep up to date via the Durham NARPO website, stay safe and feel free to contact us if you have any issues that you feel we may be able to assist with.

Service of thanksgiving for Ron Hogg

The funeral of Ron Hogg, Police, Crime and Victims’ Commissioner for County Durham and Darlington was held on Tuesday 7th January 2020

Ron lost his battle with Motor Neurone Disease in December, aged 68.

His family were joined by hundreds of colleagues, friends and well-wishers as they said farewell to the father-of-two at a poignant service of thanksgiving at Durham Cathedral.

Ron made his final journey from his home in Newton Aycliffe to Palace Green, in Durham, with a motorcycle escort before being led to the cathedral by four Northumbria Police horses.

The sound of his beloved bagpipes rang out around Palace Green as he was brought into the cathedral on the shoulders of his police officer colleagues.

An address was made by Canon Adrian Gatrill, the senior force chaplain, and there were readings by Chief Constable Jo Farrell and Sweety Sahani, Ron’s principal private secretary.

Ron’s son, Alexander Hogg, also paid an emotional tribute to his father, as did former chief constable Mike Barton who honoured his “far-reaching and illustrious” career in policing, as well as his sense of humour, engagement with the local community and ability to challenge the status quo.

With his voice breaking, he said: “We are the poorer for losing you Ron, but the richer for having been one of your friends.

"The world will miss your compassion, vision and passion. But we will not miss your inspiration, because it will live on.”

The service was followed by a private service at Durham Crematorium for family and close friends.
