Death of a Widow Member of the Durham Branch of NARPO : Mrs Jessie Hunter Gray

It is with regret that we have to inform you of the death of a Widow Member of the Durham Branch of NARPO : Mrs Jessie Hunter Gray, who died on the 21st April 2020 aged 104 years.
She leaves a daughter, Christina (Rina). 
Jessie was the widow of the late PC James (Jim) Spiers Gray (PC 188, which was later changed to PC 686), who had served at Crook, Horden and latterly Stanhope from where he retired in the late 1960’s.
After Jim’s retirement they both became involved in local activities and rural matters. 
Jessie was a very keen photographer and a member of the local photographic society.
A caricature of Jim Gray appeared in the Winter 2016 edition of the Durham Peeler (Page 20).
A private funeral due to current circumstances takes place on Wednesday 29th April at 12 noon

Death of a retired Police Officer : PC 241 Arthur James Smith

It is with regret that we announce the death of a retired Police Officer : PC 241 Arthur James Smith, who died on the 16th April 2020 aged 87 years.
Arthur James Smith served Durham Constabulary at Aykley Heads for many years and in Chester le Street and Stanley for the years prior to his retirement on 20th February 1986.
Arthur was a much loved Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather who will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.
A private family Funeral will take place due to the current restrictions.
Our thoughts are with the family at this sad time.
Donations in lieu of flowers have been requested to St Cuthbert’s Hospice in Durham where Arthur spent his final days.

Death of a retired Police Officer : Sgt 1289 John Osbourne Davison

It is with regret that we have to inform you of the death of a retired Police Officer :  Sgt 1289 John Osbourne Davison who died on 9th April 2020 aged 80 Years.
John was a much loved Father, Grandad, Great Grandad, Son, Brother and a great friend to many.
John joined the Force in November 1961 and retired in March 1984 after working across South Durham.
The funeral service took place on Friday 24th April at 17:30pm at Durham Crematorium.
Due to the current restrictions this was a private cremation for family only.

Death of a retired Police Officer : PC 1041 Philip Grieveson

It is with regret that we have to inform you of the death of a retired Police Officer :  PC 1041 Philip Grieveson who died on 10th April aged 71 years.
Phil initially joined Durham Constabulary as a police cadet and served from 30th November 1964 until 18th February 1968.
On 19th February 1968 he was appointed as constable and from HQ training he went on to serve at Jarrow, Chester-le-Street and Sacriston.
During this time he undertook a number of temporary attachments at the Technical Equipment Centre and CID Technical Aids Department.
In August 1980 he moved into photography and in January 1984 into Major scenes of crime. From 30th January 1989 he moved into technical aids training, retiring on pension on 4th May 1997.
Phil then worked with the College of Policing as a Forensic Trainer at Harperley Hall from January 1998 till retirement in September 2014.
Phil leaves a widow Lesley who have been together since they were 15 years of age.
We can confirm the funeral will take place on the 28th April 2020, at 2.30pm at Durham Crematorium but due to current restrictions this is limited to family only.
Our thoughts are with the family at this sad time.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust- which will go to the Cramlington Critical Care Unit where Phil was treated.

Death of a retired Police Officer : Sgt William Simpson

It is with great regret that we have to inform you of the death of a retired Police Officer : Sgt William Simpson who died on 6th April aged 93 years.
Mr Simpson joined the Force in November 1948, he was later promoted to Sergeant in 1967 and retired on 31st March 1974.
William served at Harperley Hall, Newton Aycliffe, Darlington and the Dog section.
The funeral has taken place at Gloucestershire Crematorium on 17th April at 11am but due to the current restrictions was for family only.
