1974 Durham County Constabulary Parade on Palace Green

Under the Local Government Act 1972, in 1974, the northern area of the force (including Gateshead, Sunderland and South Shields) became part of Northumbria Police, with Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees in the south-east going to Cleveland Constabulary and Durham County Constabulary became Durham Constabulary

Death of a retired Police officer : Ch. Insp. David Martin (Ex Durham cadet & PC)
It is with regret that we have to inform you of the death of a retired Police officer : Ch. Insp. David Martin who died at home on Saturday 26th October 2019.
David Martin became a cadet with Durham Constabulary in 1964 where he met cadet Margaret Quarton, whom he later married.
He was appointed into Durham County Constabulary as a PC in 1966.
As a Constable he served at Stockton, Felling and then Peterlee. David transferred to Northamptonshire Police in 1976 on promotion to Sergeant.
He remained in uniform for his entire police career, specialising in the traffic department, including the motorcycle branch. His postings included Corby, Kettering and then County-wide, retiring as a Chief Inspector in 1996.
David leaves a widow, Margaret, and three children Vicki ( a serving Police officer in Durham Constabulary), Ian and Gary.
The funeral will take place at 1pm on Thursday 14th November at Kettering Crematorium.
