Death of a retired Police Officer - Inspector John Goldsborough

It is with regret that we announce the death of ex Inspector John Goldsborough of Chester-le-Street, Co Durham.  Mr Goldsborough died on the 22nd October aged 80 years.  He leaves a widow Joan.

Ex Inspector Goldsborough retired from The Police Training Centre at Dishforth whilst working there on secondment.  He had previously served at Darlington, Park Lane, Boldon Colliery, Castletown, New Durham, Barnard Castle, Stanhope and HQ Control Room.  He was also seconded to The Police Training Centre at Newby Wiske during his service.

Do You Remember Tom Hoggarth (Mounted Branch, Harperley Hall in 1960's?)

Hello Alan,
I was interested in the "Those Were The Days" section and noticed Sgt. Gordon English has departed (Yes 18th. May, 2010). I believe that he was on the Mounted Branch at Harperley Hall in the 1960's with my late husband, Tom Hoggarth. I also noticed my then next door neighbour's photograph, Ernie Burden.
I am now living in Western Australia and would love to hear from anyone who remembers us. Most likely contacts will be from Hartlepool, although we did live in Houghton le Spring, Toronto and Bishop Auckland

Death of a retired Police Officer - Chief Inspector Arthur Harness

It is with regret that we announce the death of ex Chief Inspector Arthur Harness who died on the 7th October 2010 aged 89 years. 

Mr Harness retired from Durham City in 1972 following 31 years service.  Ex Chief Inspector Harness had previously served at Brandon, Middlestone Moor, Tudhoe, Jarrow, Sherburn and HQ Control Room.    

Following his retirement Mr Harness worked as a Clerical Officer at Durham City Police office from 1973 – 1983.

Thousands of injured police officers are set to benefit from a balloon race with a difference; the difference being the fundraising event takes place online, rather than in the sky.

Every day police officers suffer injuries or experience serious illnesses. The Police Treatment Centres charity provides intensive physiotherapy and other services for these officers, and as a result many of them are able to return to work far sooner than expected. While this service is primarily funded by donations from police officers, additional funding is needed to meet the Charity’s running costs. To raise these vital funds, the Police Treatment Centres is holding a virtual balloon race in conjunction with www.rentaballonrace.com

Balloons can be purchased for £5 each from www.ptc.rabr.co.uk and the unique nature of the event means the position of the balloons can be followed minute by minute on Google Earth^TM. Prizes for the balloons which cover the greatest distance include a 37” full HD television and a 64 GB Ipod Touch.

Gemma Pettman, PR and Fundraising Manager for the Police Treatment Centres, said: “This is a really unique event that our supporters can get involved in from the comfort of their own homes; there’s no need to stand outside in the cold for this balloon race. This is the first time we have held an event like this and we hope to raise a significant amount of money to help us support the many police officers who need our help."

The virtual balloon race is an eco-friendly alternative to the more traditional balloon race which can result in harm to the wildlife population, particularly sea birds, if they try to eat real helium-filled balloons when they land back on the ground.

The closing date for race entrants is 29 October. Balloons not paid for by this date will not be entered into the race which gets underway on 5 November.
